Discovering Rouen, Le Havre and Étretat: A Perfect Normandy Itinerary Between Culture, Sea and Emotion

Half-timbered houses

Exploring Normandy is always a unique experience, but this journey held special meaning for me. I traveled to visit my daughter-in-law, and along the way, I discovered — or rediscovered — three remarkable destinations: Rouen, Le Havre and Étretat. Together, they form an inspiring itinerary combining historic monuments, modern architecture, exceptional food and breathtaking coastal landscapes.

Rouen: Historic Heart of Normandy and a Food Lover’s Delight

Known as the historic capital of Normandy, Rouen is a city where every street tells a story: half-timbered houses, cobbled streets. Its beautifully preserved old town is a paradise for lovers of heritage, photography, and gastronomy.

Must-See Monuments in Rouen

Rouen Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen)

Cathedral of Rouen

Immortalized by Claude Monet, this Gothic masterpiece dominates the skyline and is one of the most impressive cathedrals in France.

The Gros-Horloge (Astronomical Clock)One of Rouen’s most iconic landmarks, this Renaissance clock is a symbol of the city and a perfect photo stop.

The Aître Saint-Maclou (Old Cemetery)A unique and atmospheric medieval ossuary, offering a deeper look into Rouen’s history and traditions.

Joan of Arc Church and monument

Joan of Arc Church (Église Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc)A modern architectural structure built on the site where Joan of Arc was executed — both moving and striking.

Rouen’s Gastronomy

Rouen is also a fantastic food destination. Traditional Norman cuisine shines here:

  • Duck specialties, seafood, and regional cheeses

  • Apple-based desserts and cider

  • Excellent local restaurants and lively food markets

Sharing meals here added warmth and authenticity to my stay — proof that great food is part of every memorable journey.

Étretat: Iconic Cliffs and Timeless Natural Beauty

No Normandy itinerary is complete without Étretat. This coastal village is world-famous for its dramatic white cliffs and natural arches rising above the English Channel.

Étretat’s Unforgettable Experiences
